Help & FAQ

We don't offer email support. Almost every common question is covered below — if you can't find your answer, the refund button covers you.

01

Pricing & purchases

How much does it cost?

$10 for one document up to 30 pages. For documents over 30 pages, $0.20 per additional page (so a 60-page doc is $16). Documents that are unusually dense (lots of fine print) carry a small density multiplier; you'll see the exact price before you pay.

A subscription is also available for $25/month, which includes 5 documents. Overage docs on the subscription are $3 each, billed on the next invoice.

All prices are USD. Sales tax / VAT / GST is added automatically at checkout based on your location.

Do you offer refunds?

Yes. There's a "Something is wrong" button on every result page. Click it within 14 days of purchase and we'll refund you, no questions asked.

We also auto-refund automatically when our pipeline can't process a document — for example if the file is corrupt, the AI run fails, or the analysis fails our internal quality checks. You won't have to ask.

Will I be charged before I see anything?

You'll see a price quote — and a preview of the first page or so — before you're asked to pay. After payment, our system processes the document (usually under 60 seconds) and emails you the result.

Can I get a discount for paying annually?

Not currently. The annual plan is a v1.1 feature.

Does the subscription roll over?

The 5 docs reset every month. They don't roll over to the next billing cycle. We keep this simple to avoid the "where did my docs go?" question.

02

How it works

What file types can you handle?

PDF, Word (.docx), and images (PNG, JPG, HEIC). Maximum file size is 25 MB. Maximum page count is 100 for text PDFs and 30 for scanned/image documents.

What's the difference between a "text PDF" and a "scanned PDF"?

A text PDF was created from a digital source (Word, Pages, etc.) and contains real selectable text. A scanned PDF is a photograph of pages — it's just images of text. Our system handles both, but scanned PDFs are slower and cost a tiny bit more to process. We cap scanned PDFs at 30 pages for cost reasons. If you've got a longer scanned doc, OCR it yourself first (Adobe Acrobat or any free OCR tool) and re-upload as a text PDF.

What if my document is in a language other than English?

The plain-English summary will still be in English. We do not translate. If most of the document is in another language, the model will say so and produce a summary based on what it can read.

How long does it take?

Most documents under 30 pages take less than 60 seconds. Longer documents or scanned PDFs may take up to 2 minutes. If something stalls past 5 minutes, you'll get an email when it's done — no need to keep the tab open.

Where's my email?

We send result emails from hello@legaltoplain.com. Check your spam folder. If it's not there, the result link is also visible on /dashboard if you've created an account, or in the URL you were redirected to after payment (save it!).

If a result email genuinely never arrived, you can grab the link by visiting /dashboard after signing in with the same email you used at checkout.

03

Privacy & data

Do you store my document?

Briefly. By default, we delete the original file 24 hours after we deliver the result. The plain-English summary stays accessible at the result link for 30 days, then expires.

You can opt to save a document longer by clicking "Save this for next time" on the result page; that creates an account if you don't have one and keeps the document in your dashboard until you delete it.

Do you train AI models on my documents?

No. We use Anthropic's API. Per Anthropic's policy, content sent via API is not retained beyond the call and is not used for training. We also don't use your documents in any internal training.

Who can see my document?

Only the AI processor (Anthropic) and our own internal pipeline. Mike (the operator) does not look at customer documents — there's no admin tool that pulls them up. Access is limited by row-level security in our database. We log every result-page view in a compliance audit table for security purposes.

Is this HIPAA compliant?

No. Don't upload protected health information.

04

Accuracy & limitations

Is the summary actually accurate?

Usually. Not always. AI models can miss things, paraphrase incorrectly, or occasionally invent things. We test our prompt against a curated set of 50 documents on every change to the prompt, and block the change if it produces hallucinations. But errors do happen.

Always read the original document before you sign or rely on it. Use our summary as a starting point for understanding, not as a final word.

Is this legal advice?

No. This is a translation tool, not a law firm. We do not have an attorney-client relationship with you. The summary is informational only. For advice specific to your situation, talk to a qualified attorney.

What if the summary is wrong?

Click "Something is wrong" on the result page within 14 days. We'll refund you. Tell us what was wrong if you have time — we use that feedback to iterate on the prompt.

Can I trust the "red flags"?

The red flags are clauses our model thinks are unusual or one-sided. The confidence score next to each flag (0.0 to 1.0) tells you how strongly the model believes it. Higher confidence = more clearly atypical. Use them as a checklist of things to ask about, not as definitive legal opinions.

05

Account & subscription

How do I cancel my subscription?

Visit /account → "Manage subscription." That opens the Stripe Customer Portal where you can cancel, update payment, or download invoices. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

How do I delete my account?

Visit /account → "Delete my account." We delete your account, all your saved documents, all your Q&A history, and your saved payment method on file. Refund records are kept for 7 years (legal requirement) and cannot be deleted.

How do I export my data?

Visit /account → "Export my data." We send you a JSON file with everything we have on you.

06

Errors & weirdness

My upload says "couldn't read this file."

The most common causes:

1. The PDF is password-protected — remove the password and re-upload.

2. The PDF is a flat scanned image (no embedded text) — try uploading as a JPG or HEIC instead, or OCR it first.

3. The file is corrupted — re-export from your source and try again.

My result link expired.

Result links expire 30 days after the document was processed. If you saved the document to your account, it's still accessible at /dashboard. Otherwise, you'd have to re-upload — which is a fresh charge.

I uploaded the wrong document.

If you haven't paid yet: just upload the right one — the wrong one is auto-deleted after a few hours.

If you paid: use the "Something is wrong" button to refund this purchase, then upload the correct document.

I got logged out unexpectedly.

Sign in again with the same email at /login. Sessions are scoped to your browser; signing in on another device is fine, but signing out everywhere is not currently a supported action.

07

Other

Can I send you a contract to be drafted?

No. We only summarize and translate documents you upload. We don't draft new contracts.

Can I integrate this into my own product?

Not yet. A B2B API is on the v1.1 roadmap. Email mike@legaltoplain.com if you'd be a customer.

Can I use this for international contracts?

The summary will be in English regardless of where you are or what jurisdiction the contract is from. The model is generally good at common-law jurisdictions (US, UK, Canada, Australia) and reasonably good at EU contracts. It's less reliable for civil-law-jurisdiction-specific concepts.

Why is there no support email or chat?

Cost. Real-time human support is the single biggest reason consumer SaaS at this price point fails. We've structured the product so that every common failure mode is auto-handled (auto-refund, auto-takedown for abuse, self-serve cancel). The FAQ at this page is the support surface. If something here doesn't cover your problem, the refund button covers your money.

Who's behind this?

Mike Geary is the operator. The model behind the summaries is Claude, by Anthropic.
